Leyte: Tacloban City Tour

Tacloban City continues to hold on amidst the nightmare of Typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan. Though there are still few traces of the calamity, the city has so much offer.

How to get there
  • Daily flights from Manila via Cebupacific, Airasia & Philippine Airlines.
  • To get to Downtown or City Proper: From the Airport, you can opt to hire a tricycle to bring you downtown (P15) or you can ride a jeepney (outside the Airport) to Downtown (P13)

Places to Visit

San Juanico Bridge
It is the longest bridge with a total length of 2.16 kilometres spanning a body of sea water. It connects the provinces of Samar & Leyte.

MacArthur's Landing Memorial
The 7 footer statues were built to commemorate the historic return of Gen Douglas MacArthur to Philippine shores on October 20, 1944.

MV Eva Jocelyn
On November 8, 2013, the MV Eva Jocelyn, which was anchored in the city harbour, ran aground and killed residents of Brgy Anibog. It was pushed by a 7 meter high storm surged caused by typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan. The shipwreck stands as a remembrance to the thousands of lives that were lost throughout the City of Tacloban that day and marks the genesis of advocacy for resiliency and adaptation to the new normal.

Sto Nino Shrine and Heritage Museum
This place contains hundreds of artifacts, antiques and art pieces coming from around the world that were collected during the Marcos regime.

Chewlove
A very instagrammable restaurant in the metro :)

Getting around
You can hire a car or tricycle to easily get around. We hired the service of Kuya Vergil as tricycle driver and tour guide to get around the city.

I highly recommend the service of Kuya Vergil. He charged us for P1,000 for four persons for our Tacloban City Tour. Initially we only planned to visit three sites, San Juanico Bridge, MacArthur Landing & San Juanico Bridge but he added more sites, Sto Nino Shrine & Heritage Museum and Chewlove. He also took us to airport for free. He guided us and made sure that our backpacks were secured. To thank him, we bought him dinner and paid for P1,200.

This trip is part of our 4 days and 3 nights Biliran, Leyte and Southern Leyte Tour. For itinerary and expenses, please click here.
